Ten Companies Solving the Challenges Water Operators Face Today

After nearly two decades of working on the cutting-edge of entrepreneurial innovation in water, something material has shifted. Not in the ambition of founders, but in how they are designing for adoption from day one.

We reviewed over 220 solutions from more than 30 countries for the 2026 Imagine H2O Accelerator. What stood out was not a particular technology category or geography, but a change in how founders frame the problem. The question is no longer “does this work?” it’s “will this get bought, by whom, and on what procurement pathway?” That is a fundamentally different design constraint that better reflects how water systems actually operate.

That shift matters in water, where buyers face asymmetric consequences for failure, procurement cycles stretch across budget years, and risk tolerance is structurally low. The water sector has never lacked innovation. It has lacked innovations that fit the system as it actually operates.

The data behind this year’s cohort reflects that shift:

~50%

of applicants already generating revenue

220+

applications reviewed from 30+ countries

companies selected for the 2026 cohort

In prior intake cycles, pre-revenue companies were common in the applicant pool. The fact that nearly half of this year’s applicants are generating revenue signals a maturing pipeline where founders are reaching commercial validation before, not after, seeking accelerator support. The companies entering the 2026 cohort are not just here to prove the technology. They are here to scale it.

“Water has never had a shortage of innovation. It had a shortage of solutions that fit the system. What stands out in this cohort is how many companies are building with procurement, risk, and real customers in mind from day one.” – Scott Bryan, President, Imagine H2O

The 2026 Accelerator Cohort

Across treatment, detection, resource recovery, and operational infrastructure, these ten companies are building for the constraints that define water today.

ADVANCED TREATMENT

AlgaFilm Technologies‘ Algae Forest is a biofilm-based wastewater treatment system that reduces nutrient removal costs by 50–90%, uses 80% less energy, and leaves a 75% smaller carbon footprint than conventional alternatives, all with no moving parts and minimal maintenance. The system efficiently removes BOD, nitrogen, and phosphorus through a compact cone bed design that optimizes solar penetration and algae growth, while weekly automated biomass harvesting produces valuable byproducts such as biofuels, fertilizer, and bioplastics.

AxNano provides the wastewater treatment sector with permanent, on‑site destruction of PFAS in solid and liquid residuals, helping generators eliminate liability, meet emerging regulations, and move beyond disposal toward true source control.

Beyond The Dome systems completely destroy wastewater sludge and biosolids in under 2 minutes. Key advantages include a 90% reduction in material hauled offsite, complete destruction of organics (including PFAS, microplastics, and viruses), and small automated turnkey systems instead of large infrastructure projects.

WATER QUALITY & MONITORING

Biota modernizes PFAS analytics with two tools: MagnaPrep™, which boosts lab throughput by replacing slow SPE with a rapid magnetic workflow, and RapidTest™, delivering on-site PFAS results in 15 minutes for $10. Together, they expand testing capacity, reduce costs, and enable faster, data-driven decision-making.

Molendotech provides rapid, portable water testing using patented endotoxin detection to identify bacterial contamination in real time. Its handheld system delivers results in about 15 minutes without lab processing, enabling faster decisions, broader detection, and improved protection of public health across drinking water and environmental systems.

 RESOURCE RECOVERY & NEW WATER

Active Membranes is redefining water desalination by transforming RO membranes from a passive consumable into an intelligent, controllable platform. Their electro-active spiral-wound modules apply a tunable low-voltage alternating current to actively manage fouling and scaling at the membrane surface—reducing reliance on chemical pre-treatment and minimizing cleaning events. Designed to integrate into existing and new plants, the platform delivers more stable performance, higher recovery, lower energy use, and reduced footprint and lifecycle costs.

Brightwater Tool’s automated and patented Freeze Concentrator can remove water and reduce volumes in high strength liquid waste streams. Retaining 90% of the solutes in a 6 to 10 X concentrate, they can be captured for beneficial reuse. Their treatment process has great promise to disrupt current practice, transforming waste to resources.

AquaPoro engineers scalable atmospheric water systems that operate below the humidity threshold of conventional systems, with dramatically lower energy costs. From residential units to industrial-scale arrays, AquaPoro builds decentralized infrastructure that turns air into ultra-pure water.

INFRASTRUCTURE, OPERATIONS & EFFICIENCY

Delta Bravo AI’s Aquaspec is the first Agentic AI operating system for water utility leadership, helping the next generation overcome the challenges of people shortages and regulatory complexity to improve operations, save money and make better water.

FloNergia is transforming water systems with its FloMov™ technology, which uses air instead of mechanical parts to move and aerate water. With no moving components, it delivers 50–70% energy savings, lowers maintenance costs, and efficiently handles complex liquid-solid mixtures across wastewater and aquaculture applications.

Why This Moment Matters

The 40% water demand-supply gap projection isn’t news, but the specific pressures it generates are immediate and operational: aquifers being drawn down faster than they recharge, surface supplies that no longer deliver the reliability that treatment trains were designed for, industrial users facing curtailment in drought years, utilities trying to develop new supplies while managing infrastructure that is decades past its design life.

The startups in this cohort are offering solutions to conditions that water system operators are managing right now. Imagine H2O’s Accelerator program helps founders access the customers, capital, and insight required to scale their solutions fast. That means working on the specific friction points that stall adoption in water. For some companies, the barrier is validation and having a credible reference site with a real utility or industrial customer. For others, it is go-to-market refinement: understanding which procurement pathway fits their technology, which regulatory driver creates urgency for a buyer, and which vertical has the shortest distance between initial conversation and purchase order.

We support that work through a network of over 110 mentors from across the water industry and through relationships with 30+ technology adopters who are actively looking to evaluate and implement new solutions via our Water Innovation Pilot Fund.
