WATER INNOVATION PILOT FUND

Imagine H2O designs and funds pilots to de-risk water and climate solutions faster.

Water doesn’t have an innovation problem. It has a deployment problem. Solutions stall between early interest and adoption, before they’re proven, financed, or scaled.

Imagine H2O’s Water Innovation Pilot Fund bridges that gap by designing and co-funding quality pilots that build the evidence customers need to buy, then delivers the funding, technical expertise, and market access to move them from pilot to procurement to scale.

Nitrite and Nitrate Monitoring for Process Emissions Reduction

Nitrite and Nitrate Monitoring for Process Emissions Reduction

Aquamonitrix & Public Utilities Board (PUB) are reducing emissions from used water treatment with nitrite and nitrate monitoring

Problem:

  • PUB is working toward its net-zero by 2045 target by reducing process emissions, including nitrous oxide formed during wastewater treatment. Existing nitrite and nitrate monitoring methods face significant accuracy limitations and can be difficult to maintain.

Solution:

  • Aquamonitrix’s low-maintenance analyzer provides real-time, accurate, and simultaneous monitoring of both nitrite and nitrate across a range of water matrices, from fresh to fully saline.

Pilot Scope:

  • Aquamonitrix is piloting its analyser at PUB’s water reclamation plant to detect nitrite and nitrate at ≥90% accuracy and provide insights into nitrous oxide formation, enabling operators to optimize processes to reduce emissions and energy use.

Turbid River Water Treatment

Turbid River Water Treatment

Atera Water & CA Water are treating highly turbid surface water with ultrafiltration

Problem:

  • Water quality in the La Giang River deteriorates yearly due to extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change, forcing utilities to use more chemicals for water treatment.

Solution:

  • Atera’s TeraStream ultrafiltration system, which uses proprietary hollow fiber membranes, treats highly turbid raw water up to 200 NTU without chemical pre-treatment.

Pilot Scope:

  • Atera piloted its TeraStream system to successfully treat 80m3 of water per day at turbidities up to 250 NTU to required standards, and at a chemical cost 88% lower than traditional UF systems.

Methane Recovery from Wastewater Sludge

Methane Recovery from Wastewater Sludge

Bluemethane & Anglian Water are capturing methane emissions from wastewater sludge

Problem:

  • New methane emissions regulations require wastewater utilities to reduce emissions from sludge treatment. Existing methane removal methods can be costly and difficult to scale.

Solution:

  • Bluemethane’s technology captures dissolved methane from wastewater sludge, helping utilities reduce emissions, recover energy, and meet environmental regulations.

Pilot Scope:

  • Bluemethane is piloting its methane recovery system at an Anglian Water treatment facility to evaluate methane removal, energy efficiency, operational performance, and cost-effectiveness under real-world conditions.

Handheld Analyzers for Decentralized Water Quality Testing

Handheld Analyzers for Decentralized Water Quality Testing

CLUIX & the Public Health Engineering Departments (PHEDs) of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are decentralizing water quality monitoring with handheld analyzers

Problem:

  • Rural communities in India often rely on contaminated sources for drinking water. Water quality testing procedures are reactive, expensive and time-consuming, delaying warnings and interventions during contamination events.

Solution:

  • CLUIX’s handheld, IoT-enabled water quality analyzer enables rapid, accurate testing across 12 water quality parameters. Test results are geo-tagged and uploaded to a centralized platform.

Pilot Scope:

  • CLUIX is deploying its handheld analyzers across 40 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to conduct 4,000 water quality tests at ≥95% accuracy and at 10% lower costs.

Decentralized Water ATMs

Decentralized Water ATMs

Drinkwell & Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) are improving water access with decentralized water ATMs

Problem:

  • Narayanganj’s aging water network provides limited, low-quality supply, leaving many residents, particularly in low-income communities, to rely on contaminated groundwater and surface water sources.

Solution:

  • Drinkwell’s water ATMs treat source water using patented ion-exchange resins for arsenic and fluoride removal, providing safe drinking water communities not reliably reached by existing piped water networks.

Pilot Scope:

  • Drinkwell piloted 2 water ATMs delivering 1,000 liters of drinking water per hour to urban residents of NCC. The pilot led to a 10x commitment from a foundation alongside in-principle support from NCC to scale to 27 ATMs.

Real-time Stormwater Monitoring

Real-time Stormwater Monitoring

Matter & Urban Drainage Company are increasing urban flood resilience with real-time stormwater monitoring

Problem:

  • Ho Chi Minh City experiences frequent flooding from heavy rainfall and high tides, and struggles to detect and respond to rapidly changing stormwater conditions due to a reliance on manual pit inspections.

Solution:

  • Matter’s stormwater sensing platform continuously monitors water levels in stormwater pits, providing real-time data and early flood alerts to support faster response.

Pilot Scope:

  • Matter is deploying 18 sensors in 15 locations across Ho Chi Minh City, providing 24/7 monitoring of surges and slow-clearing events to reduce the time taken for UDC to locate and address critical blockages.

AI Analytics for NRW Reduction

AI Analytics for NRW Reduction

SmartTerra, PDAM Depok & PDAM Surabaya are reducing NRW with AI analytics

Problem:

  • Water utilities across Indonesia lose an average of 34% of treated water through leaks, faulty meters, and unauthorized connections, while many conventional solutions require extensive digital infrastructure.

Solution:

  • SmartTerra’s AI-powered analytics platform combines data analytics, digital workflows, and targeted field services to help utilities reduce real and apparent water losses without additional infrastructural investment.

Pilot Scope:

  • SmartTerra is deploying its AI-powered data analytics tool with both utilities to identify likely leak locations, faulty meters, and illegal connections. The pilot aims to reduce NRW by 2% in monitored district metered areas.

Decentralized Seawater Desalination

Decentralized Seawater Desalination

Solar Water Solutions & Nhon Chau Island Water Supply Department are improving water security with decentralized seawater desalination

Problem:

  • Nhon Chau island lacks reliable water sources, forcing residents to rely on expensive water shipped from the mainland, especially during the dry season where average per capita water availability is <30L/day.

Solution:

  • Solar Water Solutions’ solar-powered desalination system delivers drinking water directly from seawater without requiring grid connection or diesel, reducing energy use by 80% compared with conventional diesel-powered systems.

Pilot Scope:

  • Solar Water Solutions is piloting its desalination unit on Nhon Chau island and will provide up to 9.6 m³ of drinking water per day for the island’s 2,300 residents in a cost-effective manner.

In-pipe Robotic Pipeline Inspection

Solinas & Lucknow Municipal Corporation are reducing water loss with robotic pipeline inspections

Problem:

  • Lucknow Municipal Corporation loses up to 50% of its treated water through leaks and other system losses, equivalent to 400 million liters per day. The utility currently relies on reactive maintenance with limited tools to identify pipeline defects before failures occur.

Solution:

  • Solinas’ in-pipe robotic inspection system assesses the condition of live water pipelines without service disruption, helping utilities identify defects, prioritize repairs, and reduce water losses.

Pilot Scope:

  • Solinas is piloting its robotic inspection system to inspect 12.5 km of pipeline across three pilot zones, using robotic inspections and digital analytics to reduce complaint-to-repair time from 2-3 days to ≤2 hours and reduce NRW by 8-10% in pilot zones.
